There are currently no restrictions on the practice of nutrition in Michigan!
Michigan (HB 4608) a bill to license RD’s and regulate the practice of Medical Nutrition Therapy did pass the legislature and was signed into law in 2024.
There’s a significant practice exemption for non-licensed providers:
“Exempt: An individual from providing general nonmedical nutrition information, guidance, encouragement, individualized nutrition recommendations for wellness or primary prevention of chronic disease, behavior change management, coaching, assessments, services for weight management, or other nutrition care services if the services do not constitute the practice of medical nutrition therapy, the individual does not use the titles protected under subsection (2) or otherwise hold the individual out as a dietitian nutritionist or as a provider who engages in the practice of medical nutrition therapy, and the individual does not otherwise violate this act.”
As per the law, the regulation of the practice of “medical nutrition therapy” won’t begin until 18 months after a board is established, & rules are adopted. Our estimate is that the actual regulation of “medical nutrition therapy” by a state board won’t begin for many more years.
Note: The Holistic Council plans to keep Michigan “Green” on our national map, while acknowledging the passage of the recent bill and its very limited impact to our community for the foreseeable future.
